Brief summary of pre-event including objectives
In this pre-event the approach taken to develop a new postgraduate MSc and PhD programme on Infrastructure and Community Development for the Asian region will be discussed. It will be argued that, in order to respond to the challenges in the infrastructure sector, holistic approaches are needed that equip scientists and professionals with the right mix of multi-disciplinary knowledge (combining engineering concepts, community development theories, spatial planning and environmental impact assessment methods) The specific objectives of the pre-event are:
To discuss and get feedback of participants on:
- The conceptual framework and rationale of the programme
- The research challenges in infrastructure and community development
- How the programme addresses the needs of professional practice of organisations working in the infrastructure sector.
- How the programme equips people with skills to work with local communities on infrastructure development
- Prioritization of the different disciplines and subjects

Target Participants (Expected number of participants and profile)
20 people expected.
Participants are expected to come from Government agencies, funding agencies and organisations such as consultancies and NGO's with responsibilities in the planning and development of infrastructure and an interest in discussing how to improve the development-effectiveness of infrastructure programmes by broadening the competences of their staff.
