Scaling Up Household Biogas in Asia and its Contributions in Climate Change Mitigation
Abstract:
Household biogas is a clean source of energy with multiple benefits, namely, improved indoor air quality and hygiene, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and reduced deforestation. The production and use of household biogas can also create substantial economic benefits, including generation of employment. The Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) started biogas activities in Nepal in 1989 and is currently supporting biogas programmes in 5 Asian countries. The SNV model has proven to be successful and could be used as a starting point for significant scaling up. However, before more households can benefit from biogas, a number of challenges and constraints must be overcome. In this session, SNV will present its view on the main steps to be taken to move the sector forward.
