EMISSION INVENTORY OF GHGs (CO2 AND CH4) FROM TRANSPORTATION SECTOR USING VKT AND FUEL CONSUMPTION APPROACHES IN BANDUNG CITY
Abstract:
Emission inventory in this study was limited to identy the total emission and specific sources of CO2 and CH4 from transportation sector in Bandung city. The transportation sector were divided based on the type of vehicles existing in Bandung- Indonesia (passenger car, light duty vehicles, heavy-duty vehicles and motorcycle). The GHGs emissions were calculated by two approaches using vehicles kilometer travelled (VKT) and fuel consumption (including gasoline and diesel) for the city. The emissions were calculated based on the data available from 2004 to 2006. The results of this study show that the emission level in Bandung increased 26.8% and 42,5% for CO2 and CH4 respectively for the year 2004 to 2006. The results also indicated that the level of CO2 emission calculated based on VKT approach were almost two times of the CO2 emission calculated based on the fuel consumption approach. While emission of CH4 calculated from VKT approach were about 1.5 times higher than CH4 emission calculated based on the fuel consumption approach. This can be understood that many vehicles travelling out of the city near by may purchase the fuel outside Bandung area. The main sources of CO2 in Bandung are heavy duty vehicles, passanger cars, and motor cycles while the main source of CH4 were motorcycle and passanger car. Action for air quality management need to be taken to reduce GHGs from transportation sector.
